MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Another month brings about another decline in the Performance of Manufacturing Index, showing that manufacturers continue to do it tough in the current business environment. New Zealand’s PMI result is also lower than the global average PMI result for the month of August, which shows a continued contraction, albeit slower than previous months.

Earlier this year, BusinessNZ released a discussion paper on businesses’ vision for New Zealand by 2050 and posed the question “What could the future of New Zealand look like if businesses and government worked closer together to tackle critical issues of the 21st century”. The green paper covers current issues including climate change adaptation, the shifting geopolitical landscape, technological acceleration, changing demographics and urbanisation. The full paper is available on the BusinessNZ website.

New Zealand’s manufacturing sector continued to lose momentum in August, according to the latest BNZ – BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).

The seasonally adjusted PMI for August was 46.1 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining). This was down from 46.6 in July, and the lowest level of activity for a non-COVID affected month since June 2009. The August result is also well below the long-term average activity rate of 52.9.

The manufacturing industry could transform significantly as artificial intelligence (AI) is adopted across applications, including production, decision-making, and operational efficiency

In this article, Sebastian Pattinson, an Associate Professor in Manufacturing Processes, Systems, and Organisations at the IfM, delves into how AI could improve processes and provides valuable tips for using AI-controlled systems effectively.

As part of its response to the Industry Transformation Plan for Advanced Manufacturing, MBIE has initiated an independent review of the New Zealand Product Accelerator.

The reviewers are currently examining the impact of the Product Accelerator, including potential options to support advanced manufacturing businesses. As part of this review they are seeking the views of manufacturing businesses, including perspectives from those who are unaware of the Product Accelerator and who have not used its services.

This recognises that circular approaches have a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Circular approaches reduce greenhouse gas emissions by radically increasing the efficiency of resources used within the economy. This is achieved by designing out waste and pollution, keeping resources in use for as long as possible, then recovering and repurposing products and materials at the end of their lifecycle. Studies indicate countries can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 to 39% by adopting ambitious circular approaches.
