message from the executive director

No surprises that the latest Performance Manufacturing Index shows the North Island is in contraction and the South Island is in expansion. The North Island has obviously been hampered by Auckland’s situation at levels 4 & 3. In other news, we heard you loudly and clearly regarding your barriers to export from the annual ExportNZ DHL Export barometer. A significant number (43%) of respondents to that survey are manufacturers.

Rest assured we are publicising those barriers (see below) to Government Officials, all political parties and the media.  Let’s hope we can make faster progress towards more normality reflecting that by world standards we are pretty highly vaccinated. We need to get back to work and travel, or there will be no work to get back to!

North vs South – PMI

New Zealand's manufacturing sector saw an overall return to expansion for September, according to the latest BNZ - BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).

The seasonally adjusted PMI for September was 51.4 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining).  This was 11.7 points higher than August, but still someway off levels of expansion typically seen pre-lockdown.

It will not be a surprise to you that the biggest barriers to exporting were:

3. High costs of doing business in NZ

We look forward to working with you to find solutions going forward.
