MESSAGE FROM MANUFACTURINGNZ

Ata mārie koutou,

In this months newsletter, you can register for the ExportNZ All of Government Roadshow. This free series of events is designed to give exporters and businesses the opportunity to hear from our partners about how they are supporting exporters and give you the space to engage, provide feedback, and ask questions.

A reminder that today is your last chance to fill out the ExportNZ DHL Export Barometer Survey. Your valuable input will contribute to shaping our future advocacy, and ensuring the voice of the business community is heard.

We also have industry insights, and an update from ACC.

June PMI: Under the weather

New Zealand’s manufacturing sector continued its contraction in May, according to the latest BNZ – BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).

The seasonally adjusted PMI for May was 48.9 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining). The latest result was all but unchanged from April, and still well below the long-term average activity rate of 53.0.

BusinessNZ’s Director, Advocacy Catherine Beard said that despite a few positive movements in the make-up of the Index, the sector is still continuing its trend of contraction.

Arnott's brings biscuit manufacturing back to New Zealand

The Australian maker of Tim Tams, Shapes and Farmbake Cookies has opened a new 4000m² Auckland factory, and is set to bring some biscuit production back to local shores after 25 years.

Arnott’s Group previously had a factory in Ōtāhuhu, in South Auckland, but shut it in 1997 when it changed hands and production was taken to Australia.

The new multi-million-dollar Avondale factory is able to make around 100 batches of biscuits and crackers each day, including up to 13,000 packets per day of its 180degrees gourmet crackers.

ExportNZ DHL Export Barometer - Last chance to have your say!

LAST DAY TO HAVE YOUR SAY: ExportNZ and DHL are partnering to bring you a short survey with big outcomes for NZ exporters. This election year, the results of this survey will also factor into our pre-election report and recommendations for the next government, which goes to each political party.

The business environment both at home and abroad remains tricky to navigate for New Zealand exporters. Through this survey last year, you told them the leading barriers to exporting included the cost and availability of transport and logistics, and the high cost of doing business in NZ.

ExportNZ advocated strongly for change based on your responses and they want to make sure they’re still tackling the most critical barriers to exporters in the lead-up to Election 2023.

Recent Xero Small Business Insights: How are your customers feeling?

Consumer confidence is an important economic indicator for small businesses that mainly sell to households, because "consumers" is really just another word for your "customers". The OECD Consumer Confidence Index remains below 100 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States. This means there are more consumers who are feeling negative about the future than feeling positive.

In good news for some small business owners there are signs consumer confidence has started to improve in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom in recent months. Confidence levels have flattened out in New Zealand and the United States. Only South African consumers continue to report worsening confidence levels in recent months.
