MESSAGE FROM MANUFACTURINGNZ

Ata mārie!

The Productivity Commission’s Fit for the Future report was released earlier this week. The report acknowledged the contribution migrants make, while also recommending transparent policy making and a focus on stronger links with education and training policies to ensure companies can get the skills they need. This is welcome news, as the latest PMI indicated that businesses are still faced with severe skills shortages.

Below find out how you can get involved in the Advanced Manufacturing Industry Transformation regional workshops, as well as more tech and procurement opportunities.

Slow grind – PMI

New Zealand's manufacturing sector experienced a lower level of expansion during April, according to the latest BNZ - BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).

The seasonally adjusted PMI for April was 51.2 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining).  This was 2.5 points lower than March, and the lowest monthly result since August 2021.

Inflation: What does it mean for small business?

You have to think back to before the Global Financial Crisis to recall when inflation was last an issue that most small businesses needed to be concerned about. Even as recently as last year, many economic institutions argued the post-pandemic price rises would be short-lived. As discussed in last month's Blog, that view has undergone a major shift in 2022 and central banks across the world are responding with higher interest rates. While interest rate rises can be challenging for small businesses to deal with, inflation is likely to be worse as owners try to remain profitable in an environment of fast rising costs.

Widespread and fast rising inflation pressures

Inflation is rising across all major economies. Consumer prices in the OECD area rose by 8.8% year-on-year in March 2022, compared with just 2.4% in March 2021. This was the largest year-on-year increase since October 1988.
