MESSAGE FROM MANUFACTURINGNZ

Ata mārie!

This week, ManfacturingNZ and BusinessNZ submitted on MBIE’s Advanced Manufacturing Draft Industry Transformation Plan. Overall, we are supportive of the ambition shown in the Advanced Manufacturing ITP. We believe it is crucial that the New Zealand manufacturing sector in partnership with the Government focus on the development and attraction of talent and skills, the improvement of how the public R&D sector operates, and increasing New Zealand’s global connectivity.

New Zealand's manufacturing sector fell back into contraction for the first time since the most recent national lock-down in August 2021, you can read more on this below.

Mid year blues – PMI

New Zealand's manufacturing sector fell back into contraction for the first time since the most recent national lock-down in August 2021, according to the latest BNZ - BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).

The seasonally adjusted PMI for June was 49.7 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining).  This was 2.9 points lower than May, and well below the long-term average of 53.1 for the survey.

BusinessNZ's Director, Advocacy Catherine Beard said that the drop in activity levels for June highlights the fact that the sector remains in struggle street to get back to long-term activity levels.

The founder of a Lower Hutt start-up has sorted a system to mass manufacture homes without any need for hard-to-source Gib plasterboard.

Are your legacy systems holding your manufacturing business back?

The past couple of years have been turbulent for manufacturing, with the accelerated rate of digital transformation set to increase in 2022.

You can’t say “2022” without recognising supply chain issues, the ongoing pandemic, and general disruptions; business owners are navigating these challenges while working on recovery and growth post-Covid, while also seeking the right digital technologies and strategies to invest in.

Manufacturing businesses must leverage new digital technologies and create an effective digital transformation strategy to help differentiate their services and gain a competitive advantage.
