MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Amidst the challenges that New Zealand manufacturers are currently facing, it's important to acknowledge the resilience and innovation that continue to shine through. While the recent PMI indicates a decline in activity for August and the ExportNZ DHL Export Barometer highlights ongoing concerns about business costs, this newsletter also covers some recent industry successes, as well as a case study of a business who have implemented Industry 4.0 into their operations, there is even the opportunity to attend a facility tour followed by networking.

As always, we are always here to help, so please reach out.

Slipping away - PMI August

New Zealand’s manufacturing sector slipped further into contraction during July, according to the latest BNZ – BusinessNZ Performance of Manufacturing Index (PMI).

The seasonally adjusted PMI for July was 46.3 (a PMI reading above 50.0 indicates that manufacturing is generally expanding; below 50.0 that it is declining). This was the lowest level of activity since August 2021 when the country was last in lock-down, and well below the long-term average activity rate of 52.9.

Review of the New Zealand Product Accelerator

As part of its response to the Industry Transformation Plan for Advanced Manufacturing, MBIE has initiated an independent review of the New Zealand Product Accelerator.

The reviewers are currently examining the impact of the Product Accelerator, including potential options to support advanced manufacturing businesses. As part of this review they are seeking the views of manufacturing businesses, including perspectives from those who are unaware of the Product Accelerator and who have not used its services.

ExportNZ DHL Export Barometer 2023

In an election year, the business environment both at home and abroad remains tricky to navigate for New Zealand exporters and as evidence showcased in this year’s 2023 ExportNZ DHL Export Barometer report, there are several issues that cause concern for exporters.

According to the research conducted among 250 New Zealand exporters, another year of increasing costs has been the theme over the past 12 months and is a major barrier to exporting. While supply chains are easing around the world, the rise in interest rates and the upward pressure on costs of doing business and living has meant that exporters are certainly feeling the pressure at home.

The marine industry is now worth $3 billion annually to the New Zealand economy, achieving around $2.2 billion in local sales, and $800 million in exports.

Other new statistics showed the number of apprentices in boatbuilding and related trades has reached 650, and more than 5500 boats are expected to be built this year — the vast majority trailer boats between 3.5 and 8m.

Industry 4.0 case studies - Douglas Pharma

Being a pharmaceutical company, the need to comply with ever-tightening regulations is an ongoing challenge. Douglas has a wide range of products requiring specialised, complex testing and analysis to exacting standards and regulations before the product can be released to consumers. As the business has grown and developed, the complexity within the testing labs has increased exponentially and the paper-based systems of the past were struggling to support the lab team’s needs.
